Dear Parent/Carer,

Well done to Class 1/2D for such a great assembly all about Switzerland. It was lovely to see so many parents and family members joining us for this assembly! Thank you.

Thank you very much for supporting our Rags2Riches Collection.

We raised £40.45 from this collection but, sadly, this was much lower than previously because a large number of bags were stolen from the Nursery gate before the collection. The Rags2Riches collection van is brightly decorated with their name so if you saw anyone taking the bags in an unmarked van and can give us any information about this, that would be helpful.

Children did lots of great activities in class last week about Internet Safety so please ask them about it so that they can share their learning with you.

Unfortunately, PC Thomas will not be able to provide an after school Internet Safety meeting for parents because of work commitments and so we plan to organize some parent meetings which will be led by the Digital Leaders. We’ll let you know more about these once we have confirmed the date for pupils.

This week is the start of our Welsh Fortnight when we think about Welsh legends, people and places in preparation for the Eisteddfod on Tuesday 5th March.

Please see the separate letter about a free draw for a parent and child ticket for Newport County’s match against Man. City on Saturday.

Basketball, Multisports and Phunky Food sessions continue this week. We very much appreciate the support of NewportLive who organize and run these sessions for us.

Dragon Rugby take place this week with Year 5/6 and we are also very pleased to work in partnership with Newport Gwent Dragons and County in the Community to provide extra sport opportunities for our pupils.

Miss Murphy’s Inspire Parent/Teacher Fitness Training will run on Tuesday after school.

Everyone is welcome. 😊

On Wednesday a group of pupils will take part in a Basketball Tournament at the Newport Centre.

Also on Wednesday, the Designed to Smile Dental Checks will take place for Year 1 and 2 pupils. Checks for Nursery and Reception will take place on Thursday.

The next Maths Workshop , What’s Maths All About?  for Key Stage Two parents, takes place this Thursday from 9.00-10.00am and you are welcome to come in for a coffee first once you have dropped off your child. All parents and grandparents are welcome. Mrs Couch will contact parents who missed the first meeting but were interested in finding out more.

On Friday we will be joined at our Celebration Assembly by Dr Catherine Purcell from Cardiff University. We worked with  her when she was at the University of South Wales and produced a virtual reality road safety app which was tested by our pupils and which has now been successfully launched.

You can find this on the app store:

itunes.apple.com/gb/app/virtualroadworld

Dr Purcell is continuing her research into road safety and we will be working with her over the next few months.

Attendance and National Tests

The National Tests in Literacy and Numeracy will take place from Tuesday 7th May until Tuesday 14th May. Please note that no holiday will be authorized for the month of April leading up to these tests.

Lunchtime Code Club

Our Lunchtime Code Club is now in its third year of running and I am very grateful to parents Ms Pochkhua   and Mr Phillips who volunteer to help with this.

Friends of St Woolos Meeting

Unfortunately, I have to postpone the meetings planned for Thursday 21st February because I have to attend a meeting. They will now take place on Wednesday 6th March at 2.45pm and 5.30pm instead.

Future Dates

We break up on Friday 22nd February for half term and school resumes on Monday 4th March.

Parental Consultations take place on Tuesday 5th March and Wednesday 6th March. A form is attached to this letter. Please return it by Friday of this week.  Appointment times will be given out on Monday 18th February.

Yours sincerely,

H Vaughan
