Dear Parent/Carer,

Chinese New Year was celebrated last week and classes did lots of thinking and investigating about it.

Kung Hei Fat Choi (Congratulations and best wishes for a Happy New Year!) if you have just celebrated Chinese New Year. For more information, see below.

Classes in Years 5 and 6 had a very busy ‘Over to You’ Day on Friday which gave the children lots of lovely opportunities to learn from one another.

They also took part in a really interesting series of workshops the week before, which were provided by Our Chartist Heritage, as part of their ‘Fight for Facts’ project. The focus was on how fake news was created and shared, so it was a very relevant one for the children, particularly since one of the aspects of the ‘Cynefin’ work this term that they are looking at is Democracy.

This Week
This week clubs and visits continue as normal, apart from Discovery Club on Wednesday, which won’t be taking place.

The Dental Health nurses will be visiting the Nursery on Tuesday to provide fluoride varnishing as part of the Design to Smile dental health campaign.

On Friday, Year 2 are visiting Rest Bay as part of their topic work this term.

Industrial Action
Based on an assessment of the current situation, school will be closed on Wednesday 1st February for the following classes:
Nursery
1D
1JB
2AB
2J
3/4M
3/4W
3/4MP
5/6P

Classes not listed above, will be open and children are expected to attend as usual, ready for an 8.50am start. School will be as normal on Thursday.

At the moment, we’re unable to provide any further information about school meals on the Wednesday. We are waiting for confirmation from Newport City Council about the provision that Chartwell’s Catering, who are contracted by Newport City Council to provide the school meal service, will be making.

As soon as we are able to, we will send you a message.

I’m sorry about the disruption that this will cause.

Stow Hill Pantry
This will be open again on Thursday from 3.15-4.00pm in the Family Room near the Nursery entrance.

Please bring your token with you. If you are unable to attend them because you have a child in morning Nursery, please speak to Mrs Hayes who will arrange to keep a bag for you.

If you would like to access the pantry, please contact the school for tokens. We are running a four-week token system and very much want to support you if you are struggling. We hope also that we can help you to contact other agencies for help.

We have a short-term need for toiletries such shower gel, shampoo, deodorant and toothpaste so if you would be able to send just one of these in either this week or the next, we would really appreciate it. Please don’t worry if you can’t though.

Thank you for your continuing support.

Very kind regards,
H L Vaughan
