Dear Parent,

Well done to pupils at Wednesday Play Club at The SHARE Centre for their Young Promotors project, ‘The Boy Who Bit Picasso,’ at the SHARE Centre last Tuesday evening!

Well done also to pupils who sang so beautifully at the Riverfront Studio Theatre on Wednesday evening as part of Black History Month! Thank you also to Miss Watkins and Mrs Parry for helping with this.

Alice Timms, from Gwent Music Service, visited today to rehearse with pupils who are taking part in The Gwent music Extravaganza at The Riverfront on Sunday 11th December.

The Junior Enterprise Sale takes place on the top floor on Tuesday from 3.00-4.00pm. Children have been working very hard on planning, designing and making their products and I hope that as many of you as possible will be able to attend. Each class will keep its own profits and they will choose how the money is spent. There will also be refreshments for sale for school funds.

James Doyle- Roberts from Citrus Arts and Philip Michell  are working with Year One and Two classes all day on Wednesday as part of the Lead Creative School project.

Also on Wednesday, the Nursery sessions for admission to Reception in September 2017, will take place at 9.00 and 12.40pm. Staff from the Admissions Department will be on hand to help with forms. If you do not have the internet, this will be helpful for you because staff will go on-line to help you register and forms can be found at www.newport.gov.uk

It is very important that you complete your Admission form on time because there are also always applications from children who are not currently in our Nursery and are outside our catchment area. For several years now, we have had more applications that places available and, if you do not hand your form in on time, there is strong possibility that you might not get a school place with us. You would instead be offered a place in an alternative school.

Forms can be found at www.newport.gov.uk

On Wednesday also, researchers from the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) have their second visit to the school to work with pupils in Year 4 on the Welsh Government research into creativity and creative thinking in schools.

The GEMS Reading Café will run from 2.45pm. A representative from the Sherman Theatre will join the Café this week to meet parents and children.

Our ‘Helping Your Child with a Year 5/6 Maths’ course continues on Thursday from 9.00-11.00am. Refreshments will be available. Please join us if you are a parent of a child in Years 5 or 6. You are welcome to come, even if you couldn’t come last week.

Children in Need is on Friday. Here is a message from the School Council.

‘As you might be aware, Children in Need day is on Friday 18th November. This year the theme is Spotacular. You can dress up in spots for a donation of 50p. There are going to be cakes which are 10p each and a competition which is guess the spots on Pudsey which is 10p. We hope we can raise money for Children in Need Day!’

Attendance

Our school attendance is currently 93.5% and Newport has set a target for the school to reach by the end of the summer term of 94%. In order to reach that target, the Governing Body have decided that holidays will not be authorized for any pupil whose attendance falls below 95%. This is because having a holiday will bring down a child’s attendance further since they are not in school.

However, I’d like to thank you for the very positive approach you have taken to improving attendance and lateness.

Well done to Class 1/2MS who had the highest attendance total in October at 96.9%!
