Dear Parent,

This morning we held our annual Eisteddfod to celebrate St David’s Day.

Children took part in writing, art, handwriting and craft competitions and points were added together to decide on the winning house.

Congratulations to the winning house which was Severn and also congratulations to Alex Margetts who is this year’s Bard!

The standard of competition entries was really high, especially with the huge range of amazing dragons! Thank you very much for supporting your child with this at home.

As well as holding our recent Daffodil Day, we also raised money for Marie Curie Cancer Care by selling daffodil badges for St David’s Day and the final total is now £ 168.17. Thank you very much for supporting this.

Mini ipad workshops for Class 3/4C continued this afternoon.

The music workshops with Class 4/5B are going well and children are creating their own music tracks using software such as Garage Band (Apple).

On Tuesday Class 4/5B  have their regular training session with Dragons Rugby.

There is no Cookery Club on Wednesday because Miss Driscoll and Miss Spearey are out of school on a training course. The new group will begin next week. There is no Netball Club on Thursday because Mrs Barton has another meeting.

The Y2/3 Parent Numeracy Workshops continue on Thursday morning from 9.00-11.00am.

Also on Thursday, firemen from Malpas Fire Station are visiting Infant and Junior pupils to talk to them about fire safety in the home and outside. If you would like any advice about smoke detectors or any other information about safe escape routes from the house, you are welcome to contact them.

Year 1/2 Music Sessions with Ceri Gifford-Berry continue on Friday.

Time Banking

Several parents attended the Time Banking meeting last Thursday and found it helpful. If you would like more information about this scheme, which rewards you for volunteering for an hour or more in school, please contact the office. A Time Credit is earned for every hour and these can be exchanged for entry to a number of events and places around Newport. Visit www.spice.org.uk for more information.

Parental Consultations

These will take place on Tuesday 10th (3.45-7.30pm) and Wednesday 11th March (3.45-5.30pm).  In order to help transition to high school, in the Spring Consultations, Y6 pupils join their parents for their final consultation and these discussions will be very helpful.

Please complete the attached form to choose your three preferences for appointment times and send it in by Thursday 5th at the latest. As soon as they are received, these time choices will be taken account of when teachers set appointments but they cannot be guaranteed because all parents have to be considered in these appointments. You will be given a slip with your appointment time on by Friday.

We will run a children’s DVD in the Nursery if you have been unable to make other arrangements. However, you must collect your child from school at 3.30pm. It is not possible for you to leave your child in school at the end of the day until your later appointment time because we cannot fit all the children in the Nursery at the same time. Please bring your child back with you later.

Please also collect your child from the Nursery as soon as your appointment has finished.

Mrs Couch, who manages attendance, will be in the middle hall on both evenings to answer any questions about attendance and lateness. (Governors are discussing the issue of attendance and punctuality at their meeting on Tuesday so you are welcome to speak to a Parent Governor about that. I will report back in the newsletter next week.)

Eisteddfod

I was unable to attend the Eisteddfod because I was invited to represent the school at a St David’s Day Reception at Downing Street today so I’m looking forward to hearing all about it on Tuesday.

Bonus Ball

Congratulations to Mrs Briggs!

Yours sincerely,

H Vaughan
