Dear Parent

Thank you for supporting Jeans for Genes! We raised £149.50  which will help fund research into genetic diseases.

Last week’s visits by Councillor Gail Giles, who is the Newport City Council Cabinet Member for Young People’s Services, and Mr James Harris, who is the Chief Education Officer, went extremely well and children impressed both visitors with their behaviour in class and also with their singing.

This week started off with Class 4/5B’s visit for a pizza-making workshop at the Tiny Rebel Urban Tap House. This is the first in a series of events in the run-up to the Newport Food Festival which takes place this Saturday.

On Tuesday, children in Classes 1/2 VS, MS and DJ will have the first in a series of football workshops and these will be run by Mr Ben Davies, a Football Coach and Development Officer with the Communities First Central Cluster.

He will also be running the Football Club after school on a Tuesday which Year Six and Year Five pupils are taking part in. There is currently no space for pupils younger than this but a waiting list will be maintained.

As part of their Mice topic on Wednesday, Nursery are having a ‘Pet Day’.

The Reception Reading Meeting for Reception parents takes place on Wednesday at 2.30pm. Please use the Reception entrance for this. This purpose of this meeting is to explain how reading in the Reception classes is organised and you will also be given some information to take home with you to enable you to help your child.

The GEMS Reading Café will also run on Wednesday from 2.45pm onwards in the library. You are welcome to attend this and read with your child.

On Wednesday evening, from 6.00-8.00pm, The John Frost High School, will be holding an Open Evening for parents of pupils in Years Five and Six. This is a great opportunity to find out about the school and help you make your choice for school places. If you can’t make that evening, it may be helpful for you to know the Mr Jon Wilson, the Headteacher, together with another senior leader, will be attending both of our Parental Consultations on Tuesday October  18th and Wednesday October 19th, and will be able to answer any questions you may have about high school.

On Thursday from 9.00-11.00am, the first in a series of four workshops will take place explaining how Maths is taught to children in Y3 and Y4 classes. These workshops will be run by Mrs Helen Davies, a teacher who has previously run classes and taught in our school. (There will be refreshments during the course.) In a change from our usual pattern, your child will not join you until the fourth workshop.

If you would like to attend this course, please complete and return the attached form to your child’s class teacher.

Our new Code Club started well last week, with twelve pupil members in the first group. It will continue to run on a Thursday lunchtime. If any parent or friend of the school is interested in helping with this, please let me know. We will run clubs next term and there will also be the opportunity to volunteer then.

Class 5/6P are holding their annual Macmillan Coffee Afternoon on Thursday from 2.30pm onwards. All drinks and cake are free but there will be the opportunity to buy raffle tickets to support the work of the Macmillan Cancer Charity. We hope that you can join us!

School and Nursery will be closed this Friday because we have an INSET Day.
