Dear Parent

Thank you for supporting Class 5/6p’s Macmillan Coffee Afternoon. £118.67 has been raised so far but, since we have some cakes left with a long shelf life, Mrs Parry will be selling cakes tomorrow to the Junior classes only. They are 50p each (small cakes – 2 for 50p).

On Tuesday the Football Workshops will continue with pupils in Classes 1/2 VS, MS and DJ.

Although Saturday’s match at Newport County was cancelled because of poor weather, the team met with pupils who had gone to watch the match and also gave them a goodie bag to take home so they had a lovely time.

The Bible Experience starts in Class 4/5B tomorrow afternoon. This is a four part course which looks at stories from the Old Testament in the Bible, before the birth of Jesus and it is taken by Mrs Kath Kemp, from Bethesda Church, in Rogerstone.  Mrs Kemp and Mrs Peterson, also run the Tuesday lunchtime Discovery Club which is starting again tomorrow.

The GEMS Reading Café will also run on Wednesday from 2.45pm onwards in the library. You are welcome to attend this and read with your child. (Apologies for the confusion over last week’s session.) Children of all ages are able to read with their parents at these sessions. Refreshments will be available.

Our Harvest Festival takes place on Thursday at 9.15am. Parents are welcome to come and see their child take part in this, if you wish. Please let us know beforehand if you are coming, so that we can ensure there are enough seats.

Please send your child in with items of food (tins and packets) at any time during the next few days. Please don’t send any fresh fruit or vegetables in until Thursday morning. All food donated will be given to the Raven House Trust which provides food parcels to needy families in Newport.

The Nursery will also be celebrating Harvest Festival in their morning and afternoon sessions and all donations of food are welcome.

Our Helping Your Child with Year 3/4 Maths course also continues on Thursday from 9.00-11.00am. If you would like to bring a younger child with you, that is fine, as long as you are able to supervise them. You are also welcome to join us, even if you missed the first week. Refreshments are always provided at these meetings. Depending on the preference of parents, they may decide to watch the Harvest Festival Service and then join the workshop afterwards.

Lunchtime Code Club continues on Thursday. Thank you to parents for supporting us with that.

On Friday, an actor from the Tin Shed Theatre Company will be working with Year 5 pupils to prepare them for the Chartist March which will take place down Stow Hill on Friday 4th November at 1.30pm.

Reading Resource Squad

HELP!

If you are a Reception parent, I hope that you found the Reception meeting useful. I hope also that you and your child are enjoying using their new sound rings.

Resources such as these take a long time to produce and, because we have decided to have a real focus on early reading skills this year, there will be more resources that we will be giving out over the course of the year and we will be holding more meetings.

Therefore, we are looking for a group of parents to help us on a short-term basis to help prepare some materials that we will give out to parents. You do not need any special skills or knowledge, just a willingness to help cut our or laminate and organize some materials. If you would be willing to help doing this, please let us know at Parental Consultations, where Mrs Jones will be running a Reading Information Area in the middle hall.

Parental Consultations

Parental Consultations are a very important part of the school year and are a great opportunity for you to see your child’s work. They will take place on Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th October. Attached to this newsletter is a slip for you to request a preferred appointment day and time. There is no guarantee that you will get this though, so please send in your replies as quickly as possible, but by Friday of this week at the latest.

All appointments are ten minutes long and we will be applying that very firmly this year. This is because, in the past, some parents have continued to discuss issues for much longer than the allocated time and so other parents have been held up. I know that you understand why we are making this change this year and you are always, as usual, able to make an after- school appointment to discuss any other issues with your child’s class teacher.
