Dear Parent/Carer,

School Closure Tomorrow as a Result of Red Storm Warning

The Met Office has upgraded the Storm Eunice Weather Warning for tomorrow (Friday
18th February) to RED. This is due to the significant disruption and dangerous conditions
predicted due to extremely strong winds resulting in the following:
• Flying debris resulting in danger to life
• Damage to buildings and homes, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down
• Uprooted trees are likely
• Roads, bridges and railway lines closed, with delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry
services and flights
• Power cuts affecting other services, such as mobile phone coverage
• Large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and homes,
including flooding of some coastal properties

As a result, and in an unprecedented move, Newport City Council has advised all schools not
already due to the closed for INSET purposes, to make plans to move to blended learning
arrangements for tomorrow.

This means that St Woolos Primary School and Nursery will not be open tomorrow and will be
closed until Monday 28th Feb after the half term break.

Staff are making arrangements today to transfer to blended home learning for tomorrow and
will contact you tomorrow morning via a Schoop at 9.00am with work for your child for the day,
which will link to our usual arrangements of Seesaw, Schoop and Hwb.

Class teachers will be available throughout the day via these routes of communication between
9.00am-3.30pm and they will also give you their school email address should your child need to
contact them.

A full list of logins was sent home before Christmas as a precaution, but details will be shared
again with pupils where necessary.

No information has been received yet about free schools meals so this will be communicated
separately via Schoop when it becomes available.

All school staff in Newport have been instructed to stay home and not travel to work. This
means that the school will be closed all day and there will be no Keyworker Hub. Office staff will
also maintain the same hours as class staff and work from home and so if you need to contact
the school, the school address should be used, which is
stwoolosprimary@newportschools.wales

As a result of this Red weather warning for tomorrow, it is strongly recommended that, if
possible, you work from home, stay indoors if you can and also don’t take babies and children
out in the stormy weather conditions.

This letter is also being sent home on paper. Any parent who still hasn’t yet joined Schoop will
need to download the Schoop app as soon as possible to access further work and information.
The code you will need is 3690.

Thank you for your understanding about this unprecedented closure situation. Look after
yourselves and please take care tomorrow.

Yours sincerely,
H L Vaughan
