Dear Parent/Carer,

Well done to Class 5/6B who did a really special Eid Assembly on Friday! They told us lots about Ramadan and the reasons for fasting and their singing was lovely.

It was lovely also to have many family members and other school parents joining us.

Our Eid Parties were really great! Children played lots of party games and shared lots of lovely food. Thank you very much not only for your generosity with the food you set in, but also for sending in less food this year. Everyone had lots to eat and we had hardly any wasted food left over.

Tom Moloney is in with Y5/6 on Tuesday again and they will be learning about the families arriving in Newport during the Irish Potato Famine (1845-1852).They were known as ‘mud crawlers’ because the ships’ captains tipped them out in the mud on the wharfs and they then crawled through the mud and made their way up Stow Hill to the workhouse. (The old workhouse is the big very old building in St Woolos Hospital that you can see from Risca Road.)

Our sports activities with Newport Live and County in the Community continue this week.

Early Bird – Apologies

Last week I mixed up the name of one of our winners. Huge apologies! His name is Ben Burke-Stowe.

Parent Governor Role

Forms on Wednesday for the role of Parent Governor were sent out on last Tuesday, just before Eid. We have two vacancies. The closing date is Tuesday 23rd April, by 5.00pm. Please have a think about whether you’d like to help with this role. You don’t need any special qualification and training and support is available. As a Parent Governor, you would be able to help us and represent the views of all parents. Please ask me if you want to know more about the role.

Topic Letters and Diary Dates

Topic letters were sent out yesterday. If your child was absent, please ask your child’s teacher for one if your child didn’t bring one home tonight.

Diary Dates will be sent out this week, once we have confirmed visits.

A date that you will especially want to know about though is our 120th Anniversary Week, which will take place in the week after half term, starting on Monday 3rd June.

The school first opened in 1904 and we plan to have lots of events during the week to celebrate that. When we had our Centenary in 2004, it was an amazing week, so I have every hope that this one will be just as good, if not better!

We intend to have a parent meeting to share ideas for this shortly so I’ll keep you posted, but one of the things that we plan to do is hold open evenings for former staff and pupils, so if you, or a family member, are a past pupil, we hope that we will see you some time during that week. 😊

Have a lovely week- hopefully sunny and dry!! 😊

Kind regards,

HL Vaughan
