Dear All,
Roald Dahl Week
Last week’s Roald Dahl Week was lots of fun and children talked about what they had been doing in our assembly on Thursday. We had a lovely selection of Roald Dahl character illustrations and the class draw winners were:
Class RD – Leo Sanders Class 3P – Harry Foster
Class RS – Liam Davies Class 3/4B – Maisie Bennett
Class 1H – Andre Seicaru Class 4J – Emaan Khoker
Class 1/2D – Eshaal Ali Class 5M – Oviya Nivas
Class 2MS – Noemi Petrikova-Nawratova Class 5/6M – Miral Hammoud
Class 6W – Amber Hone
They each won a Roald Dahl book.
Swimming Course
This is the first week of the three week Year 5 Swimming Course at Newport International Sports Village, Spytty Park. Children always make amazing progress on this course and it is a great opportunity for them! Please ensure children are in school by 8.15am as the coach leaves at 8.30am.
St Fagan’s Visit
Year 3/4 pupils are visiting the Celtic Village at St Fagan’s Folk Museum today and this will help with their learning about The Romans.
Year 1 and 2 Immersion Day
Year 1 and 2 classes are having an ‘Animal Encounters’/’Mind Boggling Bodies’ Day on Wednesday to help launch their project work.
Jeans for Genes
Friday is Jeans for Genes Day. Children are able to wear jeans or casual clothes for a donation of £1.00. All money raised goes towards research into genetic illnesses. If you have several children in school, then you are welcome to send in a reduced donation if you’d like to.
Manor Park Adventure Centre
We are currently unable to use Talybont Outdoor Pursuit Centre because they are unable to accommodate all of our Year 6 pupils. We have therefore arranged a visit to Manor Park Adventure Centre in Herefordshire which will take place in March 2019.
Parents of Year 6 pupils have already had a letter about this. Matthew, from Manor Adventure, will be visiting the school on Friday at 4.00pm to give a talk to parents and show them some pictures. There will be an alternative chance to hear this information next Tuesday when Miss Watkins will hold a meeting at 5.30pm.
Contact Details Card
All children who returned their updated Contact Details card were entered into a draw on Friday. Our winners were Souparno Das and Izaan Abbas.
Please return any outstanding cards as soon as possible.
Communication
We have just started to use Schoop (School in the Loop).
Please download the free Schoop app so that you can receive messages from us, if you haven’t already done so.
The code number is 3690 and the app is free and suitable for Apple and Android phones.
Please only sign up to your child’s class or Club groups.
(There are separate groups for our Teaching Staff, Breakfast Club Staff, Lunchtime Supervisors or Governors to sign up to.)
We have 66 parents signed up so far. Thank you! Please spread the word.
Class Topic Letters and Diary Dates sheets accompany this newsletter.
Spare copies of all of these will always be available at the office if you ever need any.
Clubs
All school run clubs commence this week. Please see the timetable below and note especially the pick-up times. Staff provide the clubs on a voluntary basis and we are lucky to be able to run the ones we do, so please help us by collecting your child on time.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this.

Hometime
Thank you very much for your cooperation last week while we changed the door systems to make them more manageable for everyone. Just to reassure you there will always be a member of staff at both the front gate and the wooden gate to supervise children coning in through the front door and to take messages. We’ll continue to review the situation and make improvements if we can.
From today, we plan to dismiss Miss Driscoll’s class (RD) through the Nursery so that both Reception classes are leaving through separate doors. This should make the process easier and also help Reception parents with collection, especially if they have other children to collect.
You are welcome to spend some time in the Nursery garden at the end of the school day but the gates will be shut at 4.00pm. Please remember though that you must supervise your children on the play equipment and in the garden and that Junior children are not permitted on the equipment.
Attendance
Our attendance target for 2017-18 was 94% but the final result was 93.1% so unfortunately we did not meet our target.
Newport Council has set our target for 2018-19 and it is 93.7%. Please continue to work closely with us to help our school achieve this. We can do it if we all work together. Please see Mrs Couch’s separate letter about attendance coming out tomorrow.
A Few Requests…..
Because we have created a new class we had to sort out a spare room and we have several items of old furniture to be taken to the Wastesavers shop at the Council tip. These are too big to fit in staff cars so if any parent has a van and would be willing to just take an item or two of furniture to the tip for us, I would be very grateful.
We’re trying to brighten up the outside area by the infant doors so we’d be very grateful for any donations of shrubs that you no longer want that can go into large pots.
Eco Tip
Our Eco team worked really hard last year to help us get our Platinum award. They will be giving us eco tips from time to time but today’s is to put a cardigan on before turning the heating on if you can.
Yours faithfully,
H Vaughan
