Dear Parent,

Welcome to all the Reception children who have started full-time schooling today! ?

Welcome also to all the Nursery children who are now with us! ?

It’s been a lovely few weeks and children have been very busy. Thank you very much for ensuring that your child has full school uniform. They all look very smart!

All clubs start this week.

Our Year 1/2 pupils are starting the second year of our Lead Creative Schools project and the topic is Football Fever. As part of this project, they visited Newport County at Rodney Parade this afternoon.

One of the areas that the school is really focusing on this year is the connection between Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). To help develop this knowledge, Year 5 pupils are having a STEM workshop in school on Wednesday morning which will be run by ‘SeeScience’.  It should be really interesting.

Year 1/2 have had the chance for a Tennis Workshop in school and this will take place on Wednesday afternoon.

The GEMS Reading Café will also run on Wednesday from 2.45pm onwards in the library. It is run by Mrs Hala Edwards, a specialist language teacher and all parents are welcome to join, especially those of younger children.

The GEMS Reading Cafe is a chance for you to have a cup of coffee (free), have a chat about children’s reading books and pick a book to borrow. Your child will then join you later in the Library to read with you. (Apologies for not letting you know that this was starting last week.)

On Thursday, children in Classes 1/2 VS, MS and DJ are visiting Cardiff City Football Stadium.

On Thursday lunchtime, our first Code Club session will run in school. This will be a ten week block of sessions with some Year 6 volunteers and further courses will run after Christmas. Thank you to parents Mrs Johnson, Mrs Shinde, Mr Philips, Mrs Worthing for volunteering to help and for completing the training session in school with Mrs Morton-Smith.

On Friday it is Jeans for Genes day. For a minimum donation of 50p children are invited to wear as much denim as possible (the theme is ‘Overdo it in Denim’)’ or other casual clothes. All money raised is used to support research into genetic diseases.

Also on Friday, Mrs Bablin Molik, from Sight Cymru, will be returning to school to collect the forms from the opticians about eye tests. We have had lots of these returned but if you still have this at home, please send it in by Friday to ensure that your child receives their gift.

I’m sorry about the delay in you receiving the Diary Dates sheet last week. It was my fault. However, now that you have received it, I hope that you will find this sheet helpful.

  • Friday 21st October

School and Nursery will be closed on both of these days.

Wednesday 28th September -2.30pm -Reception Parent Reading meeting

Thursday 29th September 2.30pm – Macmillan Coffee Afternoon

Contact Details Nursery Draw

Congratulations to our Nursery winner- Lily Burton. Thank you for returning the contact details. Please let us know whenever you change your address or mobile phone number so that we have up to date records in case of emergency.

School Dinners

This term the children have started to use plates, bowls and trays instead of the older airline style trays. This is helping them to eat really well and understand how meals work when they eat out. We are encouraging all the children to be independent and use their knife and fork carefully and it would be a great help if you would remind them about this as well, whenever you get the chance.

Breakfast Club

If you are a new parent to the school you may not know that a free Breakfast Club is run for our children at the SHARE Centre further up Stow Hill. It opens at 8.00am and application forms are available from the office.

Bonus Ball

There is a rollover today.

Yours sincerely,

H Vaughan
