Dear Parent/Guardian,
Well done to Class 4/5B for a great assembly about their topic work last week! Thank you parents and grandparents for such strong support also.
Thank you to Mrs Jean Morris, vet at Summerhill Veterinary Practice, and her colleague Helen, who visited Y1/2 on Thursday and brought some small animals with them.
Thank you also to Mr and Mrs Reddicliffe who have presented the school with a photographic copy of the original Chartist mural which was in the old shopping centre. This is one of only twenty produced and has been approved by Oliver Budd, who, with his late father Kenneth, produced the mural. You may be interested to know that the school mural on Havelock Street was made by Oliver Budd with pupils from St Woolos several years ago. Mr Reddicliffe also presented the school with unique Chartist jigsaw puzzles which were prizes in the Junior wordsearch competition.
Well done to those pupils who brought back completed Chartist wordsearch puzzles and picture competition entries today and a special well done to those who noticed the missing word ‘member’ which had been accidentally omitted from the Junior wordsearch! In a draw for each class, winners in Foundation Phase classes will receive a £5.00 gift card and junior winners will have a Chartist puzzle. We hope to have these soon and will present them in an assembly. Mr Reddicliffe has also offered to provide each of the Junior winners with a framed copy of the puzzle. We are very grateful to Mr and Mrs Reddicliffe for supporting the school with these unique gifts which reflect Newport’s Chartist heritage.
The dental nurses visited today to provide fluoride varnish for pupils in the Nursery and Reception classes.
Our violin teacher, Mrs Marie Evans, played her string and electric violins this afternoon for pupils so that they can decide whether they would like to learn to play violin in Year 3 in September. The music she played was ‘Ave Maria’ and ‘Skyfall’.
The National Tests for children in Year 2 and upwards are being held this week. Today children sat the Reading Test and on Wednesday they will sit the Numeracy Reasoning Test. The Numeracy Procedural Test is on Friday. Any child missing a test through illness will be able to catch up on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Please be assured that we will do all we can to ensure that children are not anxious about the tests.
On Wednesday afternoon, pupils in Y1/2 classes are having a Pets’ Afternoon and several pets, including a dwarf pony, are being brought to school. This is the first time we have done this, and it should be a great afternoon.
School is closed on Thursday because the Nursery is used as a polling station in the local elections. The staff have one of their five INSET days and one of the areas of focus will be assessment. This supports our Post Inspection Action Plan.
Please send all donations of filled boxes or items for the ‘Shoebox 4 Syria’ Appeal in to school by Friday, when they will be collected. Thank you very much for items sent in so far!
Diary Dates
The next INSET day will be taken on Thursday 23rd June which is the date of the EU Referendum.
