Dear Parent,

Thank you for supporting our Casual Day and Raffle for school funds at the end of the half term. We raised £116.60 from the casual day and £34.50 from the chocolate raffle, all of which will go towards the purchase of additional IT equipment for classes.

Congratulations to Zain Saleemi and Zaina Ali who won the half termly Early Bird draw! Well done also to all of the children who received a fridge magnet today for excellent attendance for the last half term!

The annual Reception Health Checks will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday morning, Alice Timms, a music teacher from Gwent Music Service, will be working with a group of Year Five and Six pupils who have volunteered to take part in a Christmas Extravaganza on Sunday 11th December, at the Riverfront Theatre.

The Football Workshops with Ben Davies from Communities First continue on Tuesday afternoon with pupils in Classes 1/2 VS, MS and DJ.

Also on Tuesday afternoon the Bible Experience continues with Class 4/5B.

Last half term’s Cookery group have one more session this week before the new group starts next week.

The GEMS Reading Café this week will run from 2.45pm and parents will be joined by a member of staff from The Sherman Theatre, in Cardiff. Parents wishing to leave the café to join the Football Fever meeting are welcome to do so.

Parents of children in Years One and Two have been invited to a ‘Top Secret’ Football Fever meeting on Wednesday at 3.00pm!

On Thursday we are starting a Helping Your Child with a Year 5/6 Maths course from 9.00-11.00am. This course will again be run by Mrs Helen Davies, a teacher who previously worked with the Family Learning service. The course will run for four weeks, and, in the last session, your child will be able to join you to do some of the Maths activities and games that you have made. If you have a young child in a pushchair you are still able to join us. There is no crèche though.

Refreshments will be available. If you would like to join us, please complete and return the attached form to your child’s class teacher.

Class 5/6P have their trip to the Winding House on Thursday.

The annual Chartist March takes place on Friday and Year 5 pupils are taking part. They will be leaving Newport (St Woolos) Cathedral at 1.00pm and making their way down Stow Hill, ready to meet and perform in Westgate Square at 1.30pm. Children will be going on to Stow Hill to watch the Year 5s as they go past.

This march commemorates the Chartists who marched in 1839 hoping to get the six points of their charter, made law. One of the six points was the right to vote for every man over the age of 21 because, at that time, only landowners were allowed to vote.

Parental Consultations

Thank you if you attended Parental Consultations before half term. We tried a different system this time to enable more parents to attend but unfortunately in every class there were still some parents who did not attend. These meetings are very important and we do all that we can to make them manageable for you, such as running a DVD.

A letter and a Homework Policy will be going home this week to those parents who did not attend. Our next consultations will take place in March 2017 and I hope that you will all be able to attend them.

First Thing in the Morning

Thank you very much for respecting my recent request to not come into the school with questions for Mrs Martin and Mrs Kidd. It’s helped to make things a little easier.

I know that sometimes you are worried about sending trip money or notes in with your child so, to make things easier for you, every morning Mrs Luckett (or Miss Winfield on a Friday) will have a tub with them on the door which will contain spare envelopes if you need them for trip money or notes. Pens will also be available for you to borrow. Giving notes and trip money to your child will help them to become more independent and this is a skill they need for successful learning.

School Dinners

Please note that Chartwells Catering have increased the price of school meals to £2.05. Dinner money should be brought in daily to the till, where small change will be given.

If your child has lost their dinner purse, spare ones are available for a cost of 50p.

Bonus Ball

There is a rollover today.

Yours sincerely,

H Vaughan
