Dear Parent,

Our first visit of the week took place today when an explorer joined us to do a series of science activities on water filtration today with pupils in Classes 4/5B, 5/6W and 5/6P. These classes have been part of a cluster school project to develop science skills.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) has been a big area on our School Development Plan for the year and seeks to develop skills and interest so that children are interested in finding out about science jobs in the future. By focusing on STEM, we are also helping to adjust to the new Welsh Government ‘Successful Futures’ curriculum changes and preparing children for the future.

Milittlepad Coding workshops continue in Classes 5/6P and 5/6W.

Year 6 pupils are visiting the ‘Bible Experience’ at Malpas Road Evangelical Church on Tuesday and this has been organised by Bethesda Baptist Church, Rogerstone, who also run our Discovery Club. Children will have the chance to use ipads and other technology and will then have refreshments. Last year, the children really enjoyed the activity, and I’m sure it will be just as good this year.

On Tuesday afternoon, Sharon Mason, from PlayLearnPlay, continues her Gymnastic sessions with Class 1/2MS, 1/2VS and 1/2DJ. Children are learning about basic gymnastic skills and also safe use of apparatus.

The Reception classes are doing a short Djembe Drum performance on Wednesday in our assembly at 9.15am. If you could join us for that, it would be great. Hopefully, the Class RD film will work also. After the assembly, parents are invited to stay behind and have a go at drumming with their child.

Classes 3/4M and 3/4G will have a drum session later in the morning.

The Foundation Phase Enterprise Sale takes place on Wednesday from 3.00-4.00pm. Children have been busy making items to sell to you and they are looking forward to doing various jobs selling their items. Children can keep all of the profit they make to buy something for their class.

Thursday is UNICEF day for change and we will be having a casual day in school to raise funds. Children can wear their casual clothes to school for a donation of 50p.

Class RH have their Class Assembly on Friday at 9.15am. You are welcome to attend this.

The photographer will be in school on Friday to take class and group photos. He will also take a separate Year 6 photo. These photos will be available to buy after half term but there is no obligation to buy one.

We break-up on Friday for half term. School resumes on Monday 5th June.

Ramadan

Fasting for Ramadan starts on Saturday so if your child is old enough to take part in a half or full fast, please send a note into your child’s class teacher. Children fasting will be allowed to have separate time at lunchtime.

GEMS Reading Café

Thank you for attending the Reading Café celebration last week. We are unable to continue running the café regularly because Mrs Edwards has been transferred to work in other schools. However, we hope to run one on a half termly basis on a day when she is not working elsewhere. I’d like to thank her and Mrs Hussain for their strong commitment to this activity which has helped to develop a love of reading in pupils attending with tehir parents.

Trips

We’ve taken a number of classes out on trips and visits  recently and on every occasion, children  have been a credit to you and have been complimented on their behaviour.

I’d also like to say thank you to parents and grandparents who have come with us on visits and have helped us to keep good adult to child ratios. I appreciate your help with this.

Summer Fayre

Our Summer Fayre will take place on Friday June 16th from 3.45-5.00pm. This is always a great event and I hope that you will be able to join us with your child for that. The Friends of St Woolos sent out a letter about this event on Friday and there will be brief meeting on Thursday at 3.00pm for any parents or grandparents who are able to help with giving out some letters or who have any ideas for stalls. This meeting is open to anyone, even if you haven’t been before, because there are lots of ways to help us if you are able to.

Match Funding

If any parent or family member works for an organisation such as Lloyds TSB, who offer match funding for fundraising activities, please would you let me know?
