Dear Parent,

Healthy Week was great last week and children did lots of lovely activities!

This morning Class 4/5B visited the Market Arcade by the Market for a tour and to find out more about the businesses trading there. This activity is part of a project which will be running over the course of the year and we will be following the redevelopment of the Market Arcade.

This is a very musical week for different groups of children.

This afternoon, a group of singers went to St David’s Hall in Cardiff and they will be performing  tonight in a Gwent Music Concert. They are really looking forward to it!

On Tuesday, Year 5 pupils have their last Samba rehearsal before Wednesday’s Transition Concert at The John Frost School.

On Tuesday evening we have our New Reception Intake Meeting which starts at 6.30pm. Parents have had a separate letter about his.  Please remember that this is a meeting for parents only, not children. (Your child will be visiting their new Reception class on Monday 3rd July.)

On Wednesday, Year 5 pupils are visiting The John Frost School for a Transition Day before taking part in Cluster Year 5 Concert which starts at 4.30pm. Although we cannot provide a coach to take parents down to see the concert, if you are able to make your own way there, we have a number of places spare on the big coach which is bringing children back. Please ask at the office if you would like a free return seat on the coach.

The last Operasonic rehearsal takes place on Wednesday after school.

Children wanted to do some fundraising to support the victims of the Grenfell Towers disaster and on Wednesday Year 6 pupils are doing a coffee afternoon and bingo for all parents, grandparents and friends from 2.00pm onwards. The children will be sending out a letter about this.

Our Sports Day is on Thursday and it takes place at Clifton Park (The Gem). Junior Sports start at 9.30 am and Infant Sports at 1.30pm.

We welcome all family members to come and join us. There is a sloping grass bank that you might want to sit on or you might want to bring some seats to sit on. Children will sit on one side of the running track and families have space on the other side. Please don’t come across the track to see your child. At the end of the Infant Sports in the afternoon we will walk children back to school so that we can dismiss them safely with their bags and kit at the end of the day as normal.

As in previous years, we are splitting the activities so that children have a mixture of races on The Gem and fun actvities on the school yards run by coaches from Sports Xtra.  Parents are welcome to join us on the yards also. These are the times that the activities will take place:

If the weather is sunny, please send your child in with a hat to shield their head and also apply any suncream before they come to school. Please send children with a drink but remember no glass bottles (or glass coolers inside) or fizzy drinks. Tesco Extra Cardiff Road are donating oranges for all the children. Children are encouraged to wear their house colours of either red (Usk), blue (Severn), green (Ebbw)  or Yellow (Usk).

It should be a great day!

Also in the afternoon, Class 4/5B are dressing up in Victorian clothes and will be at the Market for the Market Arcade Memory Event in the pop up area at the back of the Market.  They will also be at the front of the Market to encourage people to visit.

If you have any memories of the Market Arcade, please visit the Market between Thursday and Saturday and share your memories with members of the Newport City Council team who are leading the renovation project over the next year.

Children going to the Operasonic rehearsals will be doing a performance for their parents on Thursday after school in the top hall. It starts at 5.00pm and I hope that you can join us for this.

It was Eid on Monday and our Eid Party takes place on Friday. Children are able to wear their new Eid clothes or their own smart party clothes. Please send in food items for your child’s class on Friday morning and remember to put your name on any serving plates or containers. If there are a lot of crisps and biscuits left over, they will be given to The Raven House Trust for the food bank.

On Sunday, children who have been doing the Operasonic rehearsals will be taking part in the Newport Legends opera spectacular at The Riverfront Theatre together with pupils from some other schools in Newport.

Side Wall

You will have noticed that fencing has been on the top yard near a side wall for a year now. I wanted to let you know that I have been trying very hard to get this wall repaired by Newport City Council and although they have agreed to do so, they have had some boundary wall issues. However, after another meeting last week, I have finally been promised that the wall will be repaired in the summer holidays.

Estyn

We were visited on Friday afternoon by ITV Wales who did a feature for their 6 O’Clock News report about the school because we have been featured as a best practice school in a special Estyn report which was published on Friday about Healthy Relationships.  It is available to see at www.estyn.gov.uk

School Dinners

There are several parents owing large sums of money for school meals which have been provided by Chartwell’s Catering and who have had reminder letters from the school.   All dinner money owing, is owed to Chartwell’s not us. Please make arrangements to pay as soon as possible to avoid them taking action about the debt.

Bonus Ball

There is another rollover today.

Yours sincerely,

H Vaughan
